The good news for today’s workers is that despite some of the challenges facing them, there is still time to prepare for the Future of Work including upskilling in some of the most important interpersonal skills that will help protect their careers from automation and make them better data scientists.

The automation and elimination of workers’ jobs is a popular topic in almost every industry. According to McKinsey, in the US alone, between 39 and 73 million jobs stand to be automated within the next 5 years, which is around a third of the total workforce. Most of these jobs are being automated by robots. Additionally, companies are streamlining overall business processes, which puts those who have not taken steps to prepare at an even greater risk of losing their jobs.

Colaberry offers flexible online and on-campus training courses in data analytics that focus not only on technical and human skills but also some of the most important skills of all: interpersonal skills.

In this 7-part mini-blog series, we’re going to discuss 7 interpersonal skills you can develop right now that will set you apart in your data science career.

7 Interpersonal Skills that Will Set You Apart in Your Data Science Career

Interpersonal skills are the skills that you, as a data scientist, will need to effectively communicate, interact, and work with other individuals on a team or in a group setting. Each of the skills below can be learned and mastered to give yourself a competitive advantage.

Having great interpersonal skills starts with being patient.

1. Being Patient

Having the ability to stop and listen to other viewpoints instead of jumping in and cutting someone off mid-sentence creates a sense of respect for the other person’s point of view.

According to Forbes, there are many reasons why you should practice patience in business.

Avoiding “Ready, Fire, Aim” Syndrome

One particular reason is to avoid the “ready, fire, aim” syndrome. According to Entrepreneur Chris Myers, “I tend to rapidly evaluate situations as I encounter them, which is both a blessing and a curse. In the best cases, this rapid assessment enables me to quickly grasp a situation and plot a path forward.

In the worst cases, however, this rapid-fire thought process creates a chasm between me and the people I’m working with. When this happens, I find myself jumping forward to a conclusion while others are still processing the information at hand.” Learning to be patient is extremely important because you give others time to understand the information and offer their own opinions instead of alienating them.

Impatience is Self Sabotage

Data science, in particular, is a field that requires time to evaluate a set of data and form a conclusion. If you don’t take the time to truly appreciate others’ views or delve into the data set, you will sabotage yourself. Hidden trends in information may not appear, and you could be left out to dry and your team and management may lose trust in your capabilities.

Before responding with your opinion, take a breath and try to solicit other opinions. Sit back and allow time for your brain to evaluate and dig into the information so you can see things you might not in the heat of the moment.
