Colaberry Event Spotlight: Roxbury CC Kids Coding Club
Colaberry cares about giving back to the community. We believe that the best way to do this is to teach kids the necessary coding skills to prepare them for the future of work. We have partnered with Roxbury Community College’s Life Long Learning kids-to-college programs and have been providing kids’ coding boot camps since 2016. Colaberry Inc. sponsors girls and boys to attend two to three times per year during the Spring, Summer, and Fall sessions. Our goal is to support STEM learning initiatives focusing on inner-city children who have not traditionally had access to resources.
KIDS’ CODING: Roxbury CC Kids Coding Club and CS First is a free program that increases student access and exposure to computer science (CS) education through after-school, in-school, and summer programs. Coding clubs are run by teachers and/or community volunteers.
This series aims to:
- Increase confidence when using computers
- Grow perseverance when tackling difficult problems
- Instill the courage to try new things
- Provide a sense of belonging in technology for underrepresented students
- Demonstrate the impact that CS has on careers and communities
Often, kids come to Roxbury CC Kids’ Coding Club without any prior computer knowledge, but they finish the session with an amazing grasp of computer technology, improved levels of self-confidence, and have gained key skills such as being able to create games using Scratch, a popular programming tool. Lifelong Learning at Roxbury Community College has partnered with Colaberry to ensure that these youths learn these critical STEM skills and improve their future.
This program also teaches coding by leveraging the Google CS-First platform, a tool used by over 1 million teachers, parents, and students to create fun projects and enhance students’ skills in specific STEM areas.
Google helps and provides curriculum, materials, and support for volunteers such as Colaberry to run these amazing programs. A variety of interactive programs are offered, including Music and Sound, Fashion and Design, storytelling, Art, Friends, Game Design, and Social Media. Many kids come back for new sessions and pick up right where they left off.
